About the Book

Paperback and ebook formats

The war is won. The enemy is disarmed. So why are so many Christians still living in fear?

In a world obsessed with evil and distracted by darkness, spiritual warfare has often been twisted into a spectacle—one that breeds anxiety, superstition, and control. Big God, Little Devil offers a radical reframe. With theological clarity, clinical wisdom, and Spirit-filled insight, Dr. Sean Tobin reveals that deliverance is not about confrontation, but communion. We don’t fight for victory—we live from it. In Christ, evil is not only broken—it’s reoriented. Even the schemes of the enemy become instruments of God’s healing, drawing us into deeper trust, restoration, and wholeness.

This book is for the battle-weary and the curious, for ministers and laypeople alike. It’s a return to the simplicity of union with God, where light effortlessly displaces darkness. Through powerful stories, insights from the saints, and a grounded approach to healing, you’ll be invited to walk in the light, live from God’s presence, and reclaim your inheritance as a beloved child of the Father. The war is over. It’s time to live like it.

You’ll discover:

  • Why fear-based deliverance methods often deepen the problem
  • How the Holy Spirit integrates what the enemy tried to fragment
  • How worship and testimony silence accusation
  • How trust—not striving—is the true battleground
  • How the sacraments and Scripture equip you to walk in peace and power

Endorsements

  • “This book is dynamite! I believe it will help to change the whole paradigm for the ministries of deliverance and exorcism, and will at the same time instill deep confidence and courage in Catholics fighting the daily spiritual battle.”

    —Dr. Mary Healy

Professor of Scripture at Sacred Heart Major Seminary, bestselling author, international speaker, and serves on the Pontifical Biblical Commission

  • Big God, Little Devil is an incredible book, full of wisdom and life-transforming insights as well as practical applications. The main message is “keep your focus on Christ and not the enemy” In Sean’s own words: “What the enemy fragments, Christ integrates. The fundamental pattern of spiritual warfare is not simply power against power, but integration against fragmentation, unity against division; wholeness against brokenness” (pg 158). I loved this book. Sean’s writing is balanced and almost poetic in its style. His heart knowledge of Church teaching and Scripture is woven beautifully throughout the book with many personal and ministry examples to illustrate his message. I have already recommended this book to several people, and will do so often. I believe it will be a classic and groundbreaking work on spiritual warfare.”

    —Dr. Bob Schuchts

Founder of the John Paul II Healing Center and author of Be Healed

  • Dr. Sean Tobin has written an intriguing and insightful book - Big God, Little Devil - which he has subtitled A Radical Shift in the Approach to Spiritual Warfare and Deliverance. To be sure, he does propose a very different approach to the whole area of demonic oppression, and one which will challenge conventional practices. He reinforces his premise with abundant examples from Scripture, the saints, modern authors and his own extensive experience as a clinical psychologist. Throughout the book what comes through is Dr. Tobin's deep compassion for those who suffer. People who are involved in the ministry of praying for inner healing or deliverance from demonic harassment will find this book instructive and thought-provoking. Indeed, all readers will discover in these pages a testimony of faith, hope, love and salvation in Jesus Christ. Well done!

  • Big God, Little Devil is a refreshing dose of sanity in the often sensationalized world of spiritual warfare. Dr. Sean Tobin brilliantly dismantles the fear-based, reactionary mindset that can infiltrate Catholic circles, replacing it with a robust, integrated vision of spiritual deliverance grounded in our identity as beloved sons and daughters of God. With depth and clarity, he presents spiritual warfare not as a battle we must desperately fight, but as a victory we joyfully live. I especially like his secret weapon for spiritual warfare. This book is an essential corrective—anchored deeply in both psychological insight and solid theology—and reminds us with wit and wisdom that the devil is real, but our God is infinitely bigger.”

    —Dr. Greg Bottaro

    Founder and Director, CatholicPsych Institute

  • Big God, Little Devil is one of the most powerful resources I’ve encountered for unpacking Jesus’ words in John 8:32: ‘You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.’ With pastoral clarity and theological depth, Dr. Tobin exposes lies that bind and points readers to the liberating truth found in Christ alone.”

    —Patrick Reis

Executive Director and Co-Founder of Encounter Ministries, author of Supernatural Saints: A School of Ministry from the Saints

  • “Dr. Tobin brilliantly articulates what seasoned pastors have long known: a fear-based, legalistic, and superstitious approach to spiritual warfare is not only ineffective, it actually reinforces the work of evil spirits. I pray this compelling work, which rightfully locates victory over the enemy in receiving the love of Jesus, will serve as a necessary corrective to distorted approaches to spiritual warfare in the Church, and at the same time, inspire and encourage those seeking freedom in Christ.”

    —Fr. Mathias Thelen

President and Co-Founder of Encounter Ministries, Pastor of St. Patrick’s Church, Brighton, MI, author of Biblical Foundations for the Role of Healing in Evangelization
